3D Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The hip abductor muscles have a fundamental role in running, walking, standing and other daily activities, and can be considered a good indicator of healthy hips and an active lifestyle.

Currently muscle size is extrapolated from cross-sectional areas (CSA), hindering fully 3D volumetric analysis, and fatty atrophy is classified with subjective metrics (i.e. Goutallier grading scale). To assess 3D quantitative biomarkers from MRI, a tool for automated segmentation of the hip muscles is needed as manual labelling (the gold standard segmentation method for the hip muscles) is extremely time-demanding and not cost-effective task. We have developed strategies to automate the segmentation to aid research and make clinical studies feasible.
